Episode 12: Akeem, One Man Gang

December 21, 2017

Mr. George Gray was One Man Gang and Akeem. He discusses his time in WWE, facing Andre The Giant, Hulk Hogan, and more.

The twelfth episode of the School of Morton podcast co-hosted by WWE Hall of Fame Inductee Ricky Morton of the Rock n’ Roll Express is available for download right now.

George Gray on facing Hulk Hogan:

“Really you can't describe it... one of those experiences. The noise was so loud in the ring when his music hit and he actually made his entrance. The noise was just so loud it was deafening. You really couldn't even call spots in the ring, the people were so loud. The good thing with Hulk Hogan was once you had a set match a good fifteen, twenty minute set match you could take that match all around the whole circuit”.

George Gray's memories of “The Z-Man” Tom Zenk:

“Once he left the business he kind of just vanished. From what I remember of the guy he was a nice guy. He had a great look about him, to me he was a good worker in the ring.”

Ricky Morton on Tom Zenk:

“I hung out with Tom a lot. I treat people the way they treat me. Tom was always nice to me.” Morton added, “I imagine he did a lot of business for WCW because of his look.”

George Gray's memories on working against Andre the Giant:

“I went out in the ring... and this is Andre the Giant so every time he hits me and I'm flying all over the place. After the match he calls me back and sits me down and he said boss I'm already over. I came in here to get you over. So I don't want you flying around like that. I want to have a regular match with you” He concluded, “I was kinda like this is Andre the Giant, he doesn't have to do that.”

Episode 11: Bruce Prichard

December 14, 2017
Bruce Prichard, co-host of Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard,  joins The School of Morton Podcast and discusses memories of working for Vince McMahon in WWE, what he inherited when he walked into TNA, and offers his thoughts on what talent should be doing today.

The eleventh episode of the School of Morton podcast co-hosted by WWE Hall of Fame Inductee Ricky Morton of the Rock n’ Roll Express is available for download right now.

Bruce Prichard on talent and personalities in wrestling:

“When talent/guys look at coming into the business. Who did they grow up on, who did they idolize, who did they want to be like?  You know you had your Hogan Era where guys came out and they wanted to be like Hulk Hogan.  You had your Warrior Era where guys wanted to be like the Ultimate Warrior.  Then as time progressed you had Bret who kind of broke that mold and now people wanted to be like Bret so you look at who the top guy is and who the successful guy is. People wanted to be Ric Flair. The issue is that when you have such a strong personality Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, The Ultimate Warrior, Bret. All of these guys that were top guys. Instead of trying to emulate them and be them... do something different. Find something different so that the next generation wants to be whatever the hell you are. Not just a copy of something else.”

On working for TNA and what he inherited in talent relations:

“What I found was... kind of  it was a bit of a mess to say the least. And fortunately no matter who they put in to that role or into that situation nothing was ever going to change unless something at the top changed.  What I mean by that is not just Dixie but her mom and dad and being able to allow people to... you know they had some qualified people that were in positions that they could have done something but they were second guessed by people that had built power plants for a living.”

Bruce Prichard on watching Ricky Morton and what talent should do:

“He is selling. When it's time for him to go he goes. But up until that point he brings the audience into the arena and into the ring with him and so they're helping him every single piece of his comeback is with the audience. The audience is throwing every punch, and every kick, and every arm drag, and every dropkick... and you feel it. That's the difference. When guys say well hey man what do I do? I was thinking. I said, first problem. Don't think. Feel! Stop thinking about what you're going to do. Just go out there and feel it and what do you feel you should do.”

“Nature Boy” Ric Flair opens up about his hospitalization, his health today, advice for the future, plus stories of partying with Ricky Morton, Dusty Rhodes, Road Warrior Animal, Chuck Berry, and Dan Aykroyd. The tenth episode of the School of Morton podcast co-hosted by WWE Hall of Fame Inductee Ricky Morton of the Rock n’ Roll Express is available for download right now!

Ric Flair on being in the hospital:  “I got a really sharp pain in my stomach. I knew the pain. That was very similar to the pain I had the last time. Wendy took me to the hospital and my intestine had broken open and that’s the last thing I remember. I don’t remember anything else. On Monday they put me in an induced coma. I stayed in that and on life support for 11 days. I don’t remember any of it. I just dreamt.” He added, “I had to learn how to walk again. I couldn’t walk. I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t twist the top off a Gatorade bottle or open a diet coke I lost forty-three pounds.”

Ric Flair on falling off a boat that was in motion and Ricky Morton rescuing him: “I was trying to figure out my way. It was about a mile to the shore each way… maybe a little less I was trying to figure out which way was closer when you guys found me.” Ricky Morton talks about pulling Ric Flair into the boat, “This is true… this is Ric Flair he had a $2,000 suit on… I pulled Ric in the boat. He had a necktie on, one sock, and his underwear. That’s all he had on”.

Ric Flair on Matt Lauer: “$25 million a year salary. Are you kidding me. Who could blow that deal?”

Ric Flair on his advice for living life, “For me I would say make the most of every day. When you come close to losing that opportunity it makes you realize all the more how lucky you are to have that opportunity. So make the most of every day.”

Episode 9: Tommy Dreamer

November 30, 2017
Tommy Dreamer joins the show to talk about working in talent relations alongside Vince McMahon in WWE, Paul Heyman in ECW, and being the promoter of House of Hardcore.

The ninth episode of the School of Morton podcast co-hosted by WWE Hall of Fame Inductee Ricky Morton of the Rock n’ Roll Express is available for download right now!

Tommy Dreamer goes in-depth about Paul Heyman and ECW closing:

“I forgave him and I told him this. I forgave him for everything. I lost a lot of money. I lost my parents money and when he did his review on Monday Night RAW for when he was like the general manager and cut a promo on Vince McMahon and he said… I lied. I did everything I could to keep my company afloat just like you would Vince and he cut this really, really great and I should’t say promo. When real promos aren’t scripted they are direct from the heart and have meaning and I remember there sitting there watching it and at first crying and then I was like I get it… and especially I get it owning my own wrestling company now.”

On working directly for Vince McMahon in WWE Tommy Dreamer stated:

“I worked alongside him. I worked in the office next to him which he has veins of coffee because one he never sleeps, he may be a vampire and two his office is always cold so  that’s another way he could be a vampire but I’ve got nothing but respect for Vince McMahon, I love him.”

On his favorite part in working in the office for WWE and people he signed that did him proud:

“I hired a lot of men and women, that was my favorite part of the job. When I got to hire people and help them pursue their dream.”  He said, “I hired CM Punk, Joey Mercury. I hired a lot of people who did me proud and did themselves proud. You need in this business someone to push for you and I was kind of that guy.”

Episode 8: WWF Legend Tugboat, Typhoon of the Natural Disasters, The Shockmaster: Mr. Fred Ottman

November 23, 2017
WWF Legend Tugboat, Typhoon of the Natural Disasters, The Shockmaster Mr. Fred Ottman discusses working with Hulk Hogan, Earthquake, and more.

The eighth episode of the School of Morton podcast co-hosted by WWE Hall of Fame Inductee Ricky Morton of the Rock n’ Roll Express is available for download right now!

On deciding to go to the WWF and the presentation of the gimmick of Typhoon: “They called me in the office. Vince would sit down with all of his guys and they would have agents or whoever the powers may be. Pat Patterson was always his right hand man. They would throw things back and forth like a committee. He would call you into the office and talk to you. The thing is if they would come up with a gimmick for you they want you to be comfortable.”

How did that feel as a human being to be in the middle of huge feuds with Hulk Hogan in the WWF: “I couldn’t believe it, actually. You had the man that took the business to the next level and is that American icon.” He continued, “Once you went through that curtain, you get out there and feel the electricity of those people and Hulk was and still is a good, good guy and genuine guy and has helped so many guys in this business. Feel the electricity and the people’s response whether you are a heel or a babyface and getting that response.”

Regarding WWF Legend “Earthquake” John Tenta his tag team partner in the Natural Disasters: “I got a picture of me and him at Disney World with our families. In Orlando on the Dumbo ride with Mickey Mouse ears on. People knew who we were from TV and here’s the two big rhinoceros with Mickey Mouse ears on to ride the dumbo ride.  We were lucky we didn’t snap them off. We were both over four hundred pounds!”
